Add an interesting European look to the top of your bar. This style of match box holder was popularized in late-19th and early-20th century France.
Its unique look isn’t its only feature, as it adds function to your bar. Put some matches or toothpicks in the hollowed-out top and have the strike on hand for a vintage touch. Its anise-themed design was used many years ago for bars or distilleries to advertise that they served absinthe.
Its porcelain, hand-painted design with white glazed finish will function properly and look best when paired with the highest quality matches.
Please note: Matches are not included. For best results, use “strike anywhere” matches rather than typical household matches.

- This unique match strike (or pyrogène in French) is a reproduction of those found throughout late 19th and early 20th century Europe
- In those days it was commonplace to see a match striker sitting on a bistro table or bar
- The strikers served three purposes:
- First, the hollowed-out top was used to store matches
- Secondly, its side or base (with its ribbed surface) was used to strike and ignite the match
- And lastly, the piece served as an advertising venue as many distilleries used these match strikes to promote their liquors such as absinthe, and were usually provided to the bar for free
- White-tip, or "strike anywhere," matches are suggested for use with this piece and are available at specialty stores or online
- Regular household kitchen matches will usually not light, as the white-tip match is needed
- This striker can also be used to hold a variety of other items, such as toothpicks
- Makes a great standalone piece of tabletop decor
